How do I use the specialist directory?
Our directory lets you filter by location, clinician type (lymphologist, CLT, lipedema surgeon), and whether they accept specific insurance. Start by entering your zip code or city.
What's the difference between a lymphologist and a surgeon?
Different specialists play different roles in lipedema care:
| Clinician type | Role | When to see them |
|---|---|---|
| Lymphologist | Diagnoses and manages lymphatic/lipedema conditions medically | First specialist visit; ongoing management |
| Vascular / phlebology specialist | Diagnoses venous and lymphatic conditions | If lymphologist not available |
| Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) | Provides MLD, compression fitting, CDT | Start of conservative care; often spots lipedema first |
| Lipedema surgeon (plastic/vascular) | Performs lymph-sparing liposuction | After ≥3 months conservative care; surgical evaluation |
| Primary care physician | Referrals, prescription of compression garments | Entry point; knowledge varies |
How do I prepare for my first specialist appointment?
Bring a written symptom summary, photos of your legs and arms, your family history, and a list of conservative treatments you've already tried. Our Symptom Checker can generate a summary you can print or share.
